Orchids in the meadow

Southern Marsh orchid in the meadow
This year we have counted eleven of these beautiful orchids. Creating the meadow involved stopping regular mowing and replacing with a single annual cut, with the hay removed after allowing seeds to drop. This was accompanied by sowings of Yellow Rattle (Rhinanthus minor) which is hemi-parasitic on grass roots and reduces vigour. This has allowed the existing plant to gain energy and flower.
